As part of the "Opening with the Artist" program at the Yokohama Museum of Art, artist Yusuke Kamata presents a new installation titled "A Certain Imagination, Two Lands." The exhibition focuses on Hara Sankei, the industrialist who established Sankeien Garden, drawing on Kamata's research in Yokohama, Gifu, and Seoul.
Kamata explores the "imagination" that linked Sankei's dual identities: his artistic sensibility as a painter and patron of the arts, and his colonial business ventures in Korea (modern-day Seoul), where he acquired land based on maps without ever visiting the site. The exhibition utilizes video works, maps, and photographs to juxtapose the landscapes of Yokohama and Seoul.
Key works include a video that translates the composition of Nanga painting into modern Seoul footage and a narrative based on the diaries of painter Ushida Kikumura. Through these works, Kamata seeks to restore plurality to history and open up perspectives that have long been closed.
